I WENT TO ROBERT S. PAYNE SCHOOL FROM THE SECOND GRADE TO THE SEVENTH GRADE! DURING A RECENT OPEN HOUSE, I TOOK A FEW SHOTS AND MET THE STAFF WHO IS IN CHARGE OF THE SCHOOL NOW! THE SCHOOL IS A LOT DIFFERENT, FOR THE GOOD AND DESIGNED FOR GREATER EDUCATION FOR ALL STUDENTS! I WAS THERE FROM 1957-1964. I STILL REMEMBER MY TEACHERS: SECOND GRADE-REGINA LEA THIRD GRADE-DOROTHY MEADE FOURTH GRADE-MARY PULLEN FIFTH GRADE-ALMA IRVINE SIXTH GRADE-DELPHIA SLAUGHTER SEVENTH GRADE-J. W. STROUD

This is the 12th St. side of Payne School! Our playground which was almost all around the building is now the teachers parking lot! The large playground now is located across the street, between 13th. and 14th!
Here is Principal John Blakely, and then Assistant Principal Monica Hendricks! In 2014, Monica was promoted to Principal of Bass Elementary school! Monica is classmate Professor Hermina Walthall Hendrick's daughter in law!

Upstairs there was a indoor track for running. It is now a flat floor, and the spiral staircase leads downstairs!
Remember the clinic? Nurse Smith would weigh all the students and get their height. She would also check your head with a black-light!
Payne school only goes to the fifth grade now! This was my seventh grade classroom, Mr. Stroud! I was in this classroom when President Kennedy was killed!
What I would have given for a computer room!!

LOOKING THROUGH MY MOM’S SCRAPBOOK, I FOUND THIS TREASURE! THIS IS THE ACHIEVEMENT DAY PROGRAM FOR AN EVENT JUNE 2ND, 1961! FOR THOSE STUDENTS WHO WENT TO PAYNE SCHOOL WITH ME, YOU SHOULD REMEMBER THESE PROGRAMS EVERY YEAR! I AM SURE THAT THERE ARE MORE PROGRAMS SOMEWHERE…GEE….MOM KEPT EVERYTHING!
